The Defence Department is reportedly investigating whether Australian celebrity Tania Zaetta had sex with Australian special forces soldiers while on a recent tour of Afghanistan.

The allegations, which Zaetta denies, were published on the front page of News Limited papers this morning.

The Federal Opposition's defence spokesman, Nick Minchin, says it is deeply concerning that unsubstantiated allegations have been aired.

He is demanding an investigation into whether it was leaked by the Minister's office or the Defence Department.

Mr Minchin says Joel Fitzgibbon must also explain what action has been done to stop unauthorised revelations in future.

"It's very unfortunate and I think Mr Fitzgibbon as the Defence Minister should come out today and explain exactly how this has occurred," Mr Minchin said.

"He should apologise publicly to her. This is an extraordinary invasion of her privacy.

"He's got some answers to provide."
